Tryouts will occur after our throwing and conditioning week (March 11).  The dates of tryouts this year are Monday, March 18 through Thursday, March 21.  

11th and 12th grade  - Due to roster limits and the ability to run effective practices, we will be moving to a 20 man roster for varsity for games and practices.

9th and 10th grade tryouts - there will be very limited cuts due to player numbers.  We are anticipating 12 - 15 players per grade level.

TEAMS

Varsity - top team that includes the best players from grade 9 - 12.  Goal: juniors and seniors will practice together at varsity.  The varsity practice squad could also include players in grades 9 - 10.  

JV - focus on developing players for varsity.  This team will consist of players in grades 9 - 11.  Seniors will not play at this level.  Players can move up to varsity at any time from this team.   

B Squad - these are extra games that have been added to the schedule for our 10th graders this year.  9th graders will be asked to fill in at this level as well.  

9th Grade - this level is designed for our 9th grade players.  New this year, 10th grade players can also play on this team if needed. 

Our goal at the lower level is to gain AB's and innings pitched.  The focus is the development of our players in the preparation for varsity baseball.

The 2024 Player, Athlete, and Coach meeting will be held on Monday, March 4th at OHS - Foundations Room.

1. VFW payable to Owatonna VFW Baseball = $375

2. Legion payable to Huskies Bullpen Club = $375

3. OHS Apparel + Torey's Brunch Tickets = $145 for Grades 10 - 12.  $155 for Grade 9.  

Note: VFW and Legion checks will not be cashed until the end of May.  They can be returned if needed.

We will be playing at Target Field against Red Wing in 2024.  We are one of 4 games to be played there next Spring.  We are set to play Saturday, April 20th after the MN Twins.

Every player will be asked to sell a number of tickets that will get you into the Twins game along with our game.

For 2024, we are recommending that all players have molded spikes instead of metal.  Our lower level fields have turf home plates and mounds.  We will also be using the practice turf area located near the varsity softball complex.  Metal cleats will not be allowed on any of these sites. 

This handbook was sent to me and offers some great guidelines for the recruitment process.  It provides a framework for grade/age levels as you move through this process.

Our open gyms will start in November and will run until our opening day of practice on Monday, March 11.  Players must be registered.  See Coach Cummins for questions.

Throwing Schedule: Wednesday and Fridays in December from 7:30 - 8:00 AM. 

Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 7:30 - 8:00 AM starting in January through March.

Our practice schedule can be viewed by clicking the link below.  At this time, it is considered a rough draft.  The schedule will outline practice facilities that could be used pending the weather.  We have three options this year, which can be challenging to schedule.  Regardless, we will have great options (gyms, turf, and fields).  Contact Coach Cummins with any questions.

The lifting schedule is located towards the end of the document.  This will be confirmed in February.  The one provided is similar to the schedule that was used in 2023.

Scrimmages are set for Varsity and JV.

Thursday, April 4 vs. Breck at 5:00 PM

Saturday, April 6 vs. Brainerd at 12:00 PM

This Fall, both fields received new sod for the infield areas.  Both fields had excessive weed growth as the grass seed did not take this summer.  Sod was put down on October 6th, so we are hoping this provides approximately 4 weeks for the sod to take root.  There is additional work to be completed in the infield areas with edging and leveling of ag lyme.  We continue to be optimistic that they can be used next spring.  McKinley fields will be used if they are not ready in time.  Both fields have turf for the home plate and mound areas.   All players should plan on using molded (plastic) cleats next year. 

JV and 9th grade will use the new fields at OHS for games.  McKinley will be used as a backup in 2024.

Varsity will continue to practice and play games at Dartts Park.  There will be days that varsity practices at OHS pending the weather and conditions.  

The turf located near the Varsity Softball Field will provide our teams to practice when our baseball fields are not ready due to frost, snow cover or wet conditions.  The time will vary pending other spring sports.  A rough draft has been shared in our practice schedule.

All players should have molded cleats for practice this year.
