Owatonna boys basketball player, families, & fans
Another season has concluded for Owatonna boys basketball. This time however it was special getting to compete in the new Owatonna High School and Federated Gymnasium. The atmosphere and attendance was outstanding all year long!!! The Huskies had a strong year finishing 17-10 overall and 14-8 in the Big 9. Good for a 5th place finish. It was the fifth year in a row that the Huskies finished with at least 17 or more wins. The team had a lot of quality wins over good opponents such as Stillwater, Century, Austin, Faribault, Northfield, Winona, John Marshall, and Eau Claire Memorial (who was a top 10 team in Wisconsin at the time). The season concluded with a hard fought loss to Century in the quarterfinals.
Some team and season highlights include:
A team record of 297 three point field goal made out of 799 attempts. Both school records. Three players made at least 63 or more 3 pointers shooting over 40% along the way which included Nathan Theis, Leyton Williams, and Rielly Kleeberger.
The Huskies had three players make Big 9 All-Conference. Rielly Kleeberger and Nolan Ginskey were selected first team and Leyton Williams was honorable mention. Those three players in addition to Nathan Theis were also selected to the Owatonna People Press All Area Team.
Finally several noteworthy individual performances: Nolan Ginskey placed himself in the record books at 2nd all time in season steals with 94 and 6th all time with 135 assists. Nathan Theis is 9th all-time for 3 point% on a season shooting it 42.6% and Leyton Williams right behind him in 10th shooting it 42.2% from deep.
Great year by the boys and we are looking forward to a great off season of getting ready for the 2024-2025 hooping season!
Go Huskies!
Coach Williams
It was another very successful season for the Owatonna Boys Basketball team. They finished the year 20-8 overall and claimed second place in the Big 9 with a 16-6 record. They eventually lost in the section semi-finals to Lakeville North who went on to claim 3rd place at state the following week. Individually Blake Burmeister and Collin Vick were selected Big 9 All Conference as well as Academic All State and Ayden Walter was selected as an Honorable Mention All Big 9 player as well. Blake Burmeister set two school records during the season...most points in a game with 44 and in the same game set the record for most 3's made in a game with 11! Congrats Blake! Collin Vick will be continuing his playing career at UW-Stout next season and fellow senior Jason Klecker will be competing at RCTC for the Yellow Jackets.
It was a fantastic year for Owatonna Boys Basketball. The Huskies claimed their first Big 9 title since the 2010-2011 season and went undefeated with a perfect 22-0 record in conference. In section play they defeated Rochester Mayo in the quarterfinals, Lakeville North in the semi's, and upset the top seed Farmington in the championship to claim back to back section titles. At the state tournament Owatonna fell in the opening round by one point to Cretin Derham Hall, beat Moorhead in the consolation bracket, and finished the season with a tough loss against Andover. Owatonna finished the season with a 28-4 record overall (most wins in school history) and final state ranking of #6.
Numerous team and individual records were broken and set over the course of the season. To see the records that were set...click on the PDF above. Everything that was achieved was a testament to the time, effort, and work the kids have put in over the course of their careers.
As we turn our sights to the 2022-2023 season we are looking forward to getting back on the court with our basketball family in pursuit of challenging to be one of the top teams in the Big 9 and Section 1AAAA once again!
