Planning your Future

There are a number of steps that a student can take to plan their education after high school.  Our coaching staff is here to help you in this process.

1. Set high academic goals every quarter.  Review your goals at mid-term.  Meet and surpass your goals.  GPA and class rank are very important in gaining acceptance to a post-secondary institution.

2. Be active.  Stay involved in athletics, the arts, and other programs.  Become a leader in an organization.

3. Begin the career exploration process by taking relevant courses in an area of interest.  Along with your area interest, begin to explore these careers by taking courses at OHS that allow you to research colleges of interest and research various careers.

4. Meet with a counselor to plan and prepare for your ACT (Junior Year).  Along with your GPA, class rank, and extra-curricular activities this will become very important in your admission.

5. Continue to explore various careers.  Continue to meet and surpass your academic goals.  It's time to create a list of your top 5 - 10 colleges that you would like to attend based on your career pathway.

6. Begin specific college based research on programming, admissions, costs, location, and various other areas of interest.

7. Narrow your search to 3 - 5.  Begin college questionnaires and visits.  Interview alumni and continue to ask questions.

8. Apply for financial aid at the beginning of your senior year.

9. Apply to your top 3.  Many students begin applying by the end of their first semester.

10. Analyze options, make a decision, and accept when comfortable.  Timing is different for every student.
